It comes out in big, slow drops because of the tiny spout opening, and water’s surface tension. For instance, when the Homily (the mother) makes tea, as she pours the tea out of her teapot, it doesn’t pour. They really wanted it from the perspective of teeny tiny people, and they kept things like physics and noises in mind. The garden scenes with all the flowers and the doll house are simply beautiful. The “bad guy” isn’t really all that bad, more weird and crazy than anything. It’s just about friendship crossing boundaries (my friend was worried there was going to be some weird romantic subtext, which given some anime, the idea is not as weird as it should be). Shawn’s behavior attracts the attention of his caretaker (voiced marvelously by Carol Burnett), who begins to get suspicious and nosy. She is accidentally seen by a visiting sickly boy, Shawn, who proceeds to take great pains to try to befriend her, much to her family’s dismay. Once they are seen by humans, they must find a new home.Īrrietty is a young female Borrower who lives with her parents under a house. The number one rule is that Borrowers must not be seen. They borrow (read: steal) things that they need and will not be missed, like a sugar cube, a sheet of tissue, etc. Borrowers are like tiny humans, maybe about 5 inches tall. I’ve seen Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and now Arrietty dubbed.Īrrietty is the adaptation of the children’s book, The Borrowers. Ghibli movies though I make an exception for, since usually the dub is at least tolerable and I’m all for supporting theatrical releases of anime. #The secret world of arrietty full movie english dub 12 skin#Personal preference if you like your anime dubbed, whatever, no skin off my nose. I’ve tried watching several dubs, even the ones people swear are good, like Cowboy Bebop, and it makes my ears bleed. Normally I avoid dubbed anime like the plague. #The secret world of arrietty full movie english dub 12 movie#Overall this is a really good movie, but it didn’t hold the same magic for me as it did when I was younger.Studio Ghibli’s latest beautiful movie based on Mary Norton’s The Borrowers (yes I realize this is the French movie poster, but I like this one best). There is some peril for Arrietty and her family which maybe parents of children should a bit wary of, but other than that I wouldn’t say that families won’t have any problems with this movie. When I was seven I remember crying so much at the last scene, it hit me so hard, but this time I didn’t really feel anything, no one dies or anything that sad, but it may just be slightly upsetting for some children who are upset easily by things. Personally I would probably say the American dubbed one is better, but I don’t know whether that’s because it was the first version that I watched. I think one of the things was that I was taken aback by how different the voice of the boy sounded, as I think I watched the American dubbed one before and I couldn’t get over how British he was when in my mind he sounded American, but that was just me being picky. ![]() The only reason why it isn’t five stars for me now, is that I was expecting to fall in love with this movie again and I didn’t all that much. I feel like this is a lovely movie that all the family can enjoy. The messages in this movie are great, with challenging prejudices being one of them. I remember watching and loving this movie when I was seven years old, I really connected to the character of Arrietty and her curious and head-strong nature. ![]()
